Lem is just an average teenager working on getting the girl and furthering his career at the local planetarium - except that he's an alien. At least to U.S. astronaut Captain Charles T. “Planet 51’’ is most interesting as an attempt by the Spanish CGI company Ilion Animation to bootstrap its way into the big leagues by hiring Hollywood talent to write the script and perform the roles. The actors are all perfectly adequate (though I’d love to know what went through Cleese’s head), but no one at Pixaror DreamWorks Animation will lose sleep after seeing the brightly cluttered visuals here. You can’t buy wonder, and without it “Planet 51’’ is just one more throwaway toy.
